Teachers at Cabrillo High School Call in Sick in Protest Over Placing Basketball Coach on Paid Leave

29 TEACHERS AT CABRILLO HIGH SCHOOL IN THE LOMPOC VALLEY TOOK PART IN A PROTEST ON THURSDAY TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE HEAD BOYS' BASKETBALL COACH, WHO WAS PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. 29 OF THE 65 FACULTY MEMBERS CALLED IN SICK, FORCING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO BRING IN SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS TO HANDLE CLASSES. IT HAPPENED AFTER COACH GARY WEST WAS INVOLVED IN AN ALTERCATION WITH A STUDENT ON CAMPUS. THAT STUDENT HAS RETURNED TO SCHOOL AND SOME TEACHERS FEEL THAT HE IS DANGEROUS. THE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING THE ALTERCATION TO DETERMINE WHETHER ANY CHARGES WILL BE FILED. THE BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT SCHEDULED FOR LAST NIGHT AT CABRILLO HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH.
