SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SHERIFF BILL BROWN IS HITTING THE ROAD TRYING TO DRUM UP SUPPORT FOR MEASURE "S" ON THE BALLOT IN NOVEMBER. IF PASSED BY 2/3 OF VOTERS, THE HALF-CENT SALES TAX INCREASE WOULD BE USED TO GENERATE APPROXIMATELY $30 MILLION TO HELP FIGHT CRIME, ENHANCE FIRE PROTECTION AND TO HELP CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A NORTH COUNTY JAIL. SHERIFF BROWN SPOKE AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN FRONT OF THE SANTA BARBARA COURTHOUSE, SAYS IT'S ALL ABOUT TIMING.
ANDY CALDWELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE COALITION OF LABOR, AGRICULTURE AND BUSINESS SAYS HIGHER TAXES SHOULD NOT BE USED TO PAY FOR THE NEW JAIL.
IF MEASURE "S" PASSES, IT WOULD GO INTO EFFECT IN JULY OF 2011.
