Fines May Increase for People Involved in Cockfighting Under Proposed Legislation in California

image

Proposed legislation in California would increase fines for people who are involved in cockfighting including here on the Central Coast. It happens is rural areas and currently the fine for operating an illegal cockfighting ring is $5,000, but the proposed bill would increase that fine to $10,000. Spectators of cockfights would face a $5,000 fine, up from the current $1,000 up to 6 months in jail.
The bill would apply to anyone who is using animals to fight, including dogs and bears. Some advocates say the punishment should be changed from a misdemeanor to a felony, but right now the State is trying to reduce prison costs, so they pushed for the increased fines instead.
