A portion of Highway 166 east of Santa Maria was closed after a gas leak. Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to the area of Highway 166 between Bell and Perkins Road near New Cuyama just before 2:00 pm on Monday and the highway was closed between the 101 and Highway 33. Crews on scene reported that the operator of a backhoe severed a 2 inch gas line causing the leak and Southern California Gas responded to make the necessary repairs. Highway 166 reopened about three hours later.
