84 Year Old Man Who Drove Vehicle into Bicyclist on Highway One in Santa Barbara County is Sentenced
The 84 year old driver who struck and killed a bicyclist on Highway One between Santa Maria and Lompoc has been sentenced to three years of formal probation for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Benny Contreras was charged in connection with the April 29th crash that led to the death of 58 year old James Hamlin. Contreras' vehicle drifted to the side of Highway One, hitting Hamlin who was legally riding on the shoulder. During Tuesday's sentencing, a video was shown of Hamlin's life and Craig Hamlin talked about his brother and a letter from their mother was also read in court. Contreras was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay restitution to Hamlin's family. His driver's license was also suspended for three years.
