Sheriff's Department Says Positive Identification Made on Type of Shark that Killed Orcutt Man Off the Coast of Vandenberg Air Force Base
A 15 to 16 foot great white shark is responsible for killing a surfer off the coast of Vandenberg Air Force Base. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department says confirmation was made after Ralph Collier from the Shark Research Committee in Chatsworth, California examined the body of 39 year old Francisco Javier Solorio, Jr. of Orcutt who had been surfing on Tuesday when the attack occured. He was bit on the left side of his upper torso area and a bite mark also left on his surfboard. It is the second shark attack in the same area since 2010 when in October of that year, 19 year old Lucas Ransom was attacked by what was believed to be a great white shark while he was surfing.
